It's somewhere between an honest, person-to-person, stranger-meets-stranger environment and amateur porn and hookups. The technology has enormous potential though. I wonder if a chatroulette-esque site could be set up for musicians looking for someone to jam with. I'd love a part craigslist, part chatroulette site where I can grab my guitar, go online, and randomly be hooked up with a keyboard player or drummer for an impromptu jam session. Of course, there's always lag issues with these sorts of technologies, and anything but perfect real time video would make jamming almost impossible. Still, I'd like to think it's not too far away.
